The cost of visiting Côn Đảo by ferry is not just the ticket. A useful budget includes both sailings, applicable passenger service fees at the port, transport to and from each pier, accommodation and some contingency money.
A fare advertised as ‘from’ is only a starting point. The final amount depends on dates, seat class, passenger categories and what has already been included.
Count passengers before requesting a quote
List the number of adults, children and passengers who may qualify for a concession, together with the departure port and travel dates. Ask which documents are required and whether an infant without a fare has a separate seat.
Calculate both ferry directions separately
Write down outbound and return fares on different lines. They may have different price bands, seat classes or available vessels. Compare the ECO-to-VIP difference for the whole group, not just for one traveller, and confirm that enough seats are available.
Check the correct vessel and class
A photograph of Thăng Long or another ferry does not show the price of your sailing. Request a quote for the exact date, direction, seat class and number of passengers. Do not apply a fare quoted for one vessel to another without confirmation.
Account for the Bến Đầm passenger service charge
The Vietnamese guide lists a Bến Đầm passenger service charge of VND 18,000 per eligible passenger per applicable sailing. This is not a standard charge for every port or journey. Residents of Côn Đảo and certain eligible working personnel may be exempt with appropriate documents. Confirm with the ticket issuer whether the fee applies to your sailing and whether it is already included in the ticket total. Never add it twice.
For an applicable fee not already included: VND 18,000 × number of chargeable passengers × confirmed applicable trips.
Add transfers at both ends
Include ground transport to the mainland port, the transfer from Bến Đầm to your hotel, the return transfer to the port and your journey home. Check whether a vehicle is priced per person or per trip, luggage capacity, parking fees and whether transfers are included in a package.
Keep a simple cost checklist
- Ferry: outbound and return fare totals by passenger type.
- Port and other charges: only the items actually applicable and not already included.
- Transfers and parking: both mainland and island journeys.
- Accommodation, food and activities: according to your choices.
- Contingency: a reasonable amount for changes in the plan.
Read the conditions alongside the total
Before paying, match the quote to passenger names, dates, ferry directions, class and included services. Read the change and cancellation rules, and ask which items are separately payable. A clear written budget makes changes much easier to handle.
